Episode 43: Abigail Lapell
We talk with Canadian artist Abigail Lapell about her recent album Stolen Time. Abigail tells us that writing melodies, for her, is “like breathing…I can’t avoid it”, while lyric writing she finds more difficult, as she struggles to find the language to express the moods and feelings her melodies carry; as she puts it, “words are… very definite…” We also hear tales of canoes and bicycles, guitar for dummies, and walls of reeds.
Call it prairie noir, or Canadiana desert rock: Abigail Lapell sings haunting, gorgeous modern folk songs. Her albums have won two Canadian Folk Music Awards, English Songwriter of the Year (2020) and Contemporary Album of the Year (2017), reaching #1 on Canadian folk radio and over 13 million Spotify streams. Lapell tours widely across Canada, the U.S. and Europe, performing on vocals, piano, harmonica and finger style guitar. She's appeared at festivals including Pop Montreal, Mariposa Folk Festival, AmericanaFest, FreshGrass and Folk On The Rocks, among many others. Her new album, Stolen Timewas released in April, 2022 on Outside Music.
