Episode One: Buffalo Rose
In our first episode, we chat with Shane McLaughlin and Lucy Clabby, songwriters for the Pittsburgh band Buffalo Rose. We discuss inventory management, trippy psych freakouts, and poetry, and Lucy never once refers to me as "Dad".
Buffalo Rose is a modern folk group whose unique string & harmony-based arrangements have captivated audiences in their hometown of Pittsburgh since they released their debut EP Red Wagon, which Sound Scene Express declared one of Pittsburgh's Best EPs of 2016. Since then, they have shared the stage with national touring acts such as the Infamous Stringdusters, The Dustbowl Revival, Dangermuffin, Kuinka, and Yarn. Three prominent singers (Shane and Lucy, in addition to Mariko Reid) provide stunning vocal harmonies over dynamic, engrossing layers of stringed instruments: acoustic guitar (Shane), upright bass (Jason Rafalak), mandolin (Bryce Rabideau), and dobro (Malcolm Inglis.) Their sharp sense of rhythmic experimentation and evocative, storytelling lyricism come together for a sound with both shimmer and punch; it’s foot-tapping and breathtaking in turn. In March of 2018, they released their first full-length album, The Soil and the Seed, and will be traveling to major U.S. cities this summer to promote its release.
